Mount Vesuvius is a formidable, active volcano that has shaped the landscape around Naples for over 300,000 years. Today it is best known globally for the destruction it caused to Pompeii, yet locally it remains a prized agricultural spot. Vines and crops have been cultivated here for thousands of years, thriving in the fertile soils created by eruptions. The remarkable beauty, mild climate and agricultural wealth of this area were even recognised by the Ancient Romans, who named the region Campania Felix (“joyful countryside”). ‘Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio’ is a blend of 80% Caprettone and 20% Falanghina. The wine is a selection of grapes from the 2.5 hectare vineyard ‘Lapillo’. The vines are more than 20 years old and grow at 500 metres above sea level, on Vesuvio’s southern slopes. Vines are trained with double Guyot system to guarantee a better quality of the grapes and a balanced production. Soil here is highly porous and volcanic, rich with minerals, pumice stones, sand and lapilli. This provides good drainage as well as protection from the aphid phylloxera, allowing Sorrentino’s vines to remain ungrafted. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio is straw yellow with green reflections. On the nose, it shows intense and complex aromas of almond, white peach, pear and mineral notes. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet elegant.
